The white cοloured houses and the endless  shade of blue that you can see only in the Aegean sea are a contrast combination tied up perfectly by the natural earthly landscape  created by the eruption of the volcano with impressive rock formations.  The shape of  Santorini from the caldera side looks like a lagoon that encloses four small islands, Palaia Kameni where you can see the crater of the volcano, New Kameni , Aspronisi and Therasia.
One extraordinary element of Santorini that is well known of is the black beaches  because of the lava!
But holidays in Santorini is more than that, as it has an enriched history you can visit the archeological sights and museums. In Thira town you can visit the archeological museum, the prehistoric city museum, the naval and the Lignos folklore museum as well as the megaro guzi museum.
Southern of Santorini in between Kamari and Perissa there is the mountain of ancient Thira that connects with the highest peak of the island Profitis Ilias by a ridge named Sellada. From the ruins found the city is considered to be as old as 9th century B.C.
However in Akrotiri you can visit the excavations as the most interesting archeological site. Prehistoric Settlements from the 4th millennium B.C. were found in this area of Santorini. The Ponta Castro or the Venetian Castle is also located in Akrotiri. Walking in the small streets of Akrotiri village you can visit it as it has amazing view. Inside you will learn about the history of it and see all the traditional musical instruments.
